It was a beautiful, sunny day yesterday. It was also 5 below zero (F). I don’t know why, but somehow the bright sunshine, when it’s that cold, makes it feel even worse. The wind was still gusting and the girls didn’t want to go out at all. I had to chase them out the door. (They are fine! For those unfamiliar with livestock, a few hours outside in sub zero temperatures will not hurt them at all. They stayed close to the barn so they were out of the wind. They just don’t like going out when there is nothing for them to eat because the pasture is covered with snow.) The wind was driving the cold right into the barn. The chicken water was starting to freeze within 10 minutes of when I refilled their jug. I am so tired of freezing my tookus off doing chores!

Our nice little break from the cold snap is over. The storm blew in overnight snow and wind. The temperature has been dropping all day. The girls are back to clustering at the door, waiting for me to let them back in. So, we had 2 days where the temperature got above 20 (F). It was nice while it lasted.

It took a little convincing, but I managed to lure the sheep away from the back door of the barn. Since the snow and ice covered all the forage in the pasture they have been spending their outside time flocked around the door, yelling at me to let them back in. Today I got them to move… around to the side of the barn. Brats.

The girls are not happy with me. I keep making them go out to pasture every day when there is nothing in the pasture for them to eat.
Why am I so cruel?
a. They need the exercise
b. The fresh air and sunshine are good for them
c. It is nearly impossible for me to get any work done in the barn when they are in my way.
d. All of the above!

The pumpkins for the sheep are just frozen too hard for me to chop in this cold. Took Sissy’s advise and fed the sheep frozen apples to the girls tonight instead. The apples are frozen solid, too, but are small enough to be workable. The girls seemed to enjoy the change. Pita was working on chewing a apple right in front of me.

The girls don’t like it when the ground is crunchy!

Bear is a big baby any day, but she was even more clingy than usual today. Following me around whenever she could. Coming to the fence and peeking at me through the barn door every 5 minutes.
